She has not really done or said too much that indicates intense bravery. ALL of her backstory has power being foisted on her by cora and rumple via manipulation, with her kicking and screaming until she just gives up and accepts her life as evil queen. They even explicitly dislike ambition and traits of the slytherin house. They have the good and the bad traits of gryffindors to me. They value "standing up for what you believe in", they both are natural leaders, and both are a bit arrogant about their "im so goodie goodie" status.
They do "idiotic brave" things all the time. I tried to be creative but I kept coming back to this. They are honestly just classic gryffindors to me. He has always been a slytherin, and the dark one curse just turned him into the textbook "bad slytherin" as well. Fuck dying for the ogre wars for "honor", ya know? His family was more important to him. He just did not want to face direct conflict with others and prefered to stick to those he cared about. I almost hesitated because spinner rumple was not particularly "cunning," but ultimately decided his supposed "cowardice" was something all slytherins have that is often misunderstood. I think he is a textbook slytherin any way you look at it. I'm also going to try to avoid the slytherin = bad characters, Gryffindor = good characters. However, as a child, Snape's ambition, social climbing behavior and secret inclination towards sadism made him an obvious Slytherin when he first came to Hogwarts. At one point, Albus Dumbledore said that his loyal, courageous nature was much more befitted to Gryffindor. However, the hat denied Neville from being in Hufflepuff even though he begged for it.Īnother prime example of this happening is Severus Snape. He is clever, resourceful and cunning, yet the Sorting Hat made him a Gryffindor because he didn't feel like he belonged there. Harry Potter, for instance, embodies many of the traits that are appreciated by Salazar Slytherin. Dumbledore claimed that choices can show just as much, if not more, about who someone is as their abilities. Just because someone is placed in a certain House does not mean that they can not possess characteristics of other Houses. The Hat also appeared to take each student's wishes into account. However, these qualities do not fully surface until he learns to believe in himself. Case in point, Neville Longbottom is Sorted into Gryffindor because the Hat sensed that he was capable of demonstrating bravery and leadership during his time at Hogwarts. The Sorting Hat can detect nascent qualities in a student and place them in the House that will challenge them the most and put their character to the test.
Though it is possible Pettigrew was placed in Gryffindor because he aspired to these qualities. He was probably placed there because at the time, he admired strong, brave individuals like James Potter and Sirius Black. This is never more apparent than with Peter Pettigrew, who was Sorted into Gryffindor but ultimately turned out to be quite cowardly, self-serving and corruptible. It seems that the Sorting Hat tends to place students based on qualities they value rather than qualities they personify. Im pasteing this from the harry potter wiki to explain some of my house choices.
